Frida - Something's Going On

Released in the fall of 1982, it was probably in the summer of '83 that I first heard the title track. Phil Collins mania hadn't gripped the world ... he was blip on the horizon - you could see him coming. His distinctive drums were the reason the song grabbed me initially, but it was a killer tune, and Daryl Stuermer's guitar solo was the icing on the cake. Yes, this was the same Frida who was in ABBA, although at the time she seemed to be old as dirt she was probably only 36 or 37 years old. Of course considering I was still in my teens (okay, as late into my teens as you can get) that's a big gap. I bought the album mainly for the title track, but I found there was a lot to like and as a bonus (at least to me) was Jim Rafferty's (brother to Gerry) "I See Red" a song I always really liked. Both Russ Ballard, and Rod Argent contributed a song each, with Russ Ballard's "I Know There's Something Going On" being the big song here. There wer...

Five for Fighting No.7 - SAGA, Ian Thomas Band, Styx, Juice Newton, ABBA

Lucky number seven. A bit of an odd assortment this time out. Mostly familiar faces, and some odd ducks I had no idea what to do with because I've written about the bands before, but the albums were still part of my landscape so I figured why not put them in anyway? So here they are for your reading enjoyment. Don't forget to like and subscribe, and ring the bell to get updates. ... yeah, that just reads as desperate. I'm just glad you're here. Fun drinking game for you - take a shot every time you find a typo or grammatical error. You'll need to do this when you have time to recover. Five For Fighting No. 7 SAGA - Wildest Dreams (1987) Ian Thomas Band - Still Here (1978)  Styx - Kilroy Was Here (1983) Juice Newton - Quiet Lies (1982) ABBA - ABBA (1975) SAGA - Wildest Dreams (1987) After Behaviour in 1985 the band's trajectory would take a turn. For some fans, particularly those who'd been on the bandwagon the longest, the next couple of albums would rep...

ABBA - The Album

Back in the day I bought one ABBA album, and it was their 1981 swansong (okay, they've since released Voyage , but it's after their best before date so I'm not counting it, even though I bought it) The Visitors and for me that was enough. Of course I'd end up with a couple of best of CDs and a few of their other albums. Then my daughter went through her Mamma Mia phase and a decade later we had to watch Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again which had stretched things pretty thin as I thought they'd more or less used up their best songs in the first one, that and it looked like Cher would break if she moved too quickly. I never really went through an anti-ABBA phase and I liked a lot of their songs - but I didn't go out of my way to broadcast this to my friends. Apparently they were often categorized as disco, but they were just vanilla pop that didn't offend your parents. However, as I'm listening to this my wife yells downstairs, "Honey, are you on a disco...
